SAMARA's Central Theme
Basic Materials

Mr. Wright considered glass to be a material to help realize his concept of "breaking out of the box" architecture. Glass walls, arranged in a continuity form, allowed walls to seemingly disappear to the point that divisible lines between interior and exterior space become blurred and removed from human consciousness.

Many of Mr. Wright's earlier homes were of wood, brick or stone and plaster. As science and manufacturing processes advanced new materials were added to his constructional materials palette.

Usonian homes were primarily of wood and masonry. Generally, one or two materials were central themes with highlights of glass and steel. Although these might be considered generalities, as with Mr. Wright, no rigid guidelines are definable, because he was continually experimenting with stone, brick, plaster, concrete, steel and glass.
