Reflected Light

Pink Lights and Hues of the Living Room
Rich Pink and Rose Hues

Frank Lloyd Wright incorporated indirect lighting into the three horizontal book shelves on the living room wall. Concealed lighting appears every four feet along the entire length of the wall.

Wooden box-like dividers located between the horizontal shelves contain two pink light bulbs, one facing upward toward the ceiling and the other downward toward the built-in seats.

Upward, pink light reflects off of the reddish-pink brick and white plaster ceiling. Downward, pink light reflects off of the reddish-pink brick and Philippine wood on the top of the seats.

With direct western sun exposure, light reflecting off the Taliesin red concrete floor immediately outside the front door casts a rich, elegant pink color on the white plaster of the overhang.

The amazing part of this phenomenon is that the reflection can be observed from inside the house through the slotted living room window nearest to the front entrance. The resulting reflected rose hue appears exactly like the uniform color of the Sonoran Desert that I observed from the sky while flying out of Scottsdale by plane.

Frank Lloyd Wright has a wonderful way for surprising us by bringing desert rose hues typical of his own Taiesin West into the living space of one of his finest clients, Dr. and Mrs. John Christian, at SAMARA.
