Pink Block Wall of SAMARA
The Living Desert Palette

Frank Lloyd Wright designed pink colored concrete blocks for the wall running along the edge of the property line on Northwestern Avenue. The concrete blocks are stacked one row on top of another 20 rows high to create an innovative light screen.

With one inch overlaps on their horizontal ends, a patchwork of openings is created allowing sunlight to stream through to the inside of the wall. As light passes through uniform sized openings between the more than 2,000 concrete blocks, it strikes a multitude of surfaces to cast beige, pink and ivory images characteristic of the Sonoran landscape.

In the late afternoon sun, pine trees near the wall glisten with pinkish hues. In combination with the SAMARA wall, the desert palette of the Southwest comes alive once more.
