The Living Environment"To think is to deal in simples." Louis Sullivan, 1893
A strong sense of order, balance and repose is evident in the Usonia house. The rhythm created by repeating a familiar geometric shape produces a natural, integrated ornamentation in the design. Everything fits. Nothing is left unresolved.
For the Usonian homeowners, this sense of calm makes living more comfortable. For the guests, a sense of wonder prevails until the subconscious mind has had a chance to rationalize the whole against its many integrated parts. In time, the occupants realize that the grid system with its repeated shape is the basic foundation of the architectural design. At SAMARA, Frank Lloyd Wright ensured that the living space was totally integrated by designing the floors, walls and built-in furniture of this later Usonian home on a uniform four-foot square grid system.
