Nature and Philosophy

"To think is to deal in simples." Louis Sullivan, 1893

Frank Lloyd Wright's concepts of architecture were always one of space, not structure. With the grid plan and unit system of construction, he could achieve space by moving exterior walls of a house to the perimeter of the geometric grid. Need more space? Just add more grids and then move the walls.

This was the case in the Stanley and Mildred Rosenbaum house in Florence, Alabama. An outside wall became an inside screen and new outside walls were added to the design and built upon an expanded 2-foot by 4-foot grid.

With the help of the grid system, Wright was able to produce his dream for Usonia where simplicity became an artform, almost spirtual. The natural house became a reality. SAMARA, as a pristine example of Wright's Usonian houses, exemplifies the spiritual nature of Wright's architectural philosophy.
