Spring 2000 SAMARA Furniture and Its Use In A Frank Lloyd Wright Designed Home The Owner's View John Christian ![]()
In 1937, Frank Lloyd Wright created what he called "origami" chairs for use at Taliesen West and designed modifications and other versions for other homes from time to time.
For SAMARA, the origami chair relates to the image of the Japanese art of folding paper; thus, the. The arms like a butterfly with wings poised for flight and many different angles, the chair is most graceful and comfortable.
Mr. Wright also designed an "organic" chair shown at the desk in the photograph taken in the guest bedroom. The chair has an hexagonal shaped back representing the structure of the benzene ring, the basic structure of organic chemistry; thus, relating it to Nature. Because of the relation of Wright's architecture to Nature, he called his work "organic architecture".
