The Dining Area

By the turn of the twentieth century, Frank Lloyd Wright had envisioned dining rooms as featured spaces suitable for serving and eating family meals. His early dining spaces reached into gardens often projecting beyond the rest of the house. He used stained glass windows derived from plant forms to create natural environments.

By 1936, Mr. Wright had designed dining areas adjoining the workspace with a shared masonry core on one side and a wall of windows on the other. This combination of building style resulted in more open space.

SAMARA's dining area presents a sense of a highly articulated new space through a relatively low ceiling and high floor. Mrs. Christian insisted on a "separate" dining room. Mr. Wright resolved her request through his ingenious idea to extend the living space toward the garden or lanai outside of the home.

The mitered glass corner of the dining room extends the vision from the living room along a diagonal axis reaching from the inglenook to the garden wall, a distance of nearly 80 feet. Placed within the dining area are built-in cabinets and shelves on opposite ends of the room along with the specially designed SAMARA dining table and chairs.
