SAMARA Furniture and Its Use
In A Frank Lloyd Wright Designed Home

The Architect Within
Doug Wintin

Usonian Style

Frank Lloyd Wright would never have separated the aesthetic from the equation of form and function. He used very traditional appearing materials (such as the mahogany in SAMARA) in conjunction with the rectilinear forms of the Usonian style furnishings while at the same time manipulating the scale of the furnishings in order to keep from giving the pieces an uncomfortable and heavy appearance.

This also kept the furnishings low within SAMARA, expanding the vistas to the landscape. This ability to visually move from inside to out and back again could have been destroyed had the furniture designs been of a larger scale. The furnishings become as much a part of the organic architecture of SAMARA as the house itself.

The designs for the chairs, sofas, hassocks, tables and TV trays are organic architecture of a small scale. They work within the realm of the Usonian house and create the feeling of "home" in conjunction with the architecture.
