Human Scale

My interest is the use of scale in relationship to the joining of the natural surroundings with the created environment of SAMARA. Usonian furnishings were far from the mainstream designs of the day.

Simple in nature and construction, Usonian furniture deviated from the norm in both style and ergonomics. The sizing of seating and tables are proportionately lower than the standards for furniture designs of the time.

A plausible explanation for this deviation in scale of Usonian furniture is discussed by Victor Papanek in his book, "Design for the Real World".

"According to Wright, scale was the greatest threat to social meaning. As early as the forties he wrote: 'Little forms, little homes, for industry, little factories, little schools, a little university going to the people mostly by way of their interest . . . little laboratories . . .' (Wright's italics)."

Perhaps Wright was dealing with human scale within the individual home as he did on a much grander scale in his designs for Broadarce City and his work at the Ardmore development.
