SAMARA Furniture and Its Use
In A Frank Lloyd Wright Designed Home

The Eclectic Mr. Wright
Jerry Johnson

Utilitarian Furniture

In 1914, Frank Lloyd Wright designed Midway Gardens, a Chicago restaurant which failed and was torn down in the 1920's. But his designs for this indoor-outdoor establishment have survived. In the guest bedroom will be found a similar desk chair, if not a direct copy of the Midway Gardens inside dining chair.

On the lanai is a glass-topped, red, steel legged table and accompanying chairs which also have their roots at Midway Gardens. This furniture fits perfectly at SAMARA with its red concrete floors and patina blue copper fascia.

Furniture designed to meet the needs of any specific Wright building is quite common - we are all familiar with his built-ins. But Mr. Wright went to extra extremes to design utilitarian furniture. An excellent example of this is a portable table-bench in the workspace or kitchen of SAMARA.

Perhaps the ultimate design to meet the specific needs of SAMARA are several television tables. These two-part devices consist of a tray with a separate base. Unlike most TV tables, storage when not in use is easily done by placing these in a closet or cabinet -- not out in plain view. Two or three of these versitile table stands can usually be found utilized in the living room.
