SAMARA Furniture and Its Use
In A Frank Lloyd Wright Designed Home

The Eclectic Mr. Wright

Classic Designs

There are several examples of "good design" reuse at SAMARA. At least one of Frank Lloyd Wright's ideas for his own 1889 house was carried forward to SAMARA, a classic Usonian home designed in 1954 - the built-in benches in the living room.

The classic Prairie structure, Robie House (1908), gives us a small, short, square stool located in the living room. While not designed specifically for SAMARA, Dr. and Mrs. Christian decided to purchase a reproduction of the stool as a reminder of Mr. Wright's versatility in the design of his furniture.

Wright often complained about his own furniture designs being uncomfortable, but in 1949, he designed a chair for his homes, Taliesin and Taliesin West, that was unusual, comfortable and attractive - the Origami (Butterfly) chair. A visit to the guest bedroom will find one of these beautiful chairs designed specifically for SAMARA.

During the 1950's Mr. Wright set about to design a furniture grouping for the Heritage-Hendredon Furniture Company. When the Christians first moved into SAMARA, in 1956, the dining room furniture was from this collection.

This was done in lieu of finding a furniture maker who was capable of building the SAMARA designed dining table and chairs. Two of the Heritage-Hendredon dining chairs from the original grouping are still found in the living room today.
