1   What did you think of the first design of SAMARA?
    2   Did you change it?
3   What is your favorite thing in the house?

The first design we received of SAMARA was a beautiful colored drawing of the house looking North up from the valley towards the Southeast side of the house.

It seemed to us to be beyond our dreams. We were very excited to see what our new home looked like.

There were a few (not many) changes that Mr. Wright agreed to make in these first designs. The driveway was moved around to the North side of the house.

The house was lowered somewhat on the building site to make the living room level lower than the nearby highway level. In this way most of the traffic noise goes over the top of the house and lessens the noise level in the house itself.

Mr. Wright had designed a "study" for me between the master bathroom and our daughter's bedroom. This was eliminated to make each of the adjacent rooms larger.

My favorite thing in the house is the television set in the living room which responds to "open sesame" by raising up out of its cabinet.

I think this may be one of your favorites too. Visitors usually react with surprise when they see the TV work. When you next visit my home, if you will remind me, we will see if we can make it work again!

I've enjoyed responding to your questions. To learn more about SAMARA, I encourage you to visit the other Benton Third Grade Team pages. You may also be interested in taking a look at the Benton SAMARAQuest Challenge.

The Benton SAMARAQuest Challenge is designed to expand your learnings beyond what you already know about Frank Lloyd Wright and SAMARA. The Challenge suggests activities for exploring things you're interested in learning more about in your studies of the world's greatest architect.
